Zyban

Zyban is a mood elevating medication use as an aid to help people quit smoking. It is also used to treat depression under the trade name, WellbutrinŽ.

Who should not take Zyban?

People who are currently taking or have recently taken the antidepressant, WellbutrinŽ (Buproprion), or monamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI's).
People with a head injury, epilepsy, or any other seizure disorder should not take ZybanŽ due to its potential to cause seizures.
People with anorexia or bulimia should not take ZybanŽ because they are more likely to experience seizures when taking the drug.
ZybanŽ is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.

How do I take my Zyban?

The usual recommended dose is one 150 mg tablet in the morning for 3 days, followed by one 150 mg tablet in the morning and one 150 mg tablet in the early evening, starting on day 4 of treatment. Doses should be taken at least 8 hours apart. Target quit date should be 1 to 2 weeks after first dose of ZybanŽ. Continue ZybanŽ for 7 to 12 weeks. Avoid alcohol use to reduce the risk of seizure. Do not chew, divide or crush tablets.

What are the possible side effects of Zyban?

The most common side effects that may occur include dry mouth, difficulty sleeping, shakiness, and skin rash. Avoid bedtime doses to minimize the occurrence of dry mouth and difficulty sleeping. ZybanŽ may cause flu-like symptoms, like aching muscles, fatigue, and general discomfort. Dizziness may occur if in a sitting or lying position. Rise slowly to prevent possibly fainting.
